Prof. Klän will stay for a whole quarter, teaching Lutheran Confessions II (Smalcald Articles and the Formula of Concord). LTS places great emphasis on teaching the Lutheran Confessions, and students receive instruction on all the Lutheran Confessions in the Book of Concord.

With the defense of his doctaoral thesis on January 29th, LTS lecturer for Dogmatic Theology Tobias Schütze finished his PhD under the title “Yes and No: Lutheran Confessional Foundations of Inter-Church Recognition” [Sic et Non. Lutherische Bekenntnisgrundlagen zwischenkirchlicher Anerkennung] at the University of Münster, Germany, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Anne Käfer.

In his doctoral thesis, Schütze attempts to examine the Lutheran Confession for statements on inter-church or inter-confessional recognition and recognizes an aspectival ecclesiology in the Lutheran Confessions. This in turn results in a cohesion of inter-church recognition and non-recognition, which is only possible through the utilization of law and gospel.

We congratulate him for this outstanding achievement!

We are privileged to have both Prof. Dr Werner Klän (SELK, Germany) and Dr Dieter Reinstorf (FELSISA) teaching intensive courses at LTS from October 2-13. Prof Klän is teaching “Theology of the Lutheran Confessions”. Klän has been a regular instructor at LTS since 2008, but because of the pandemic, it is his first visit in four years. It is wonderful to have him back. Dr Reinstorf, former Bishop of the FELSISA, is teaching at LTS for the first time in many years. He had taught at the seminary in Enhlanhleni previously, that was before the seminary moved to Pretoria at the end of the year 2000. Reinstorf is teaching on Luke’s Gospel. We wish instructors and students a blessed time!

Yesterday, our third-year students had the unique opportunity to be taught by the author of a prescribed textbook himself! Dr Harold Senkbeil, author of the book The Care of Souls, taught an online class on “spiritual warfare” as part of the course “Pastoral Care”. An hour of teaching on the topic was followed by another hour of questions and answers.

After the online class, Dr. Senkbeil remarked: ” I thoroughly enjoyed myself and hope that the men were edified. I was frankly impressed by the insight and depth of their questions and comments”.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn from Dr Senkbeil, for which we are grateful. We pray that they will be able to apply what they have learned in their future ministry.
