We are happy to announce the election of the new Student Representative Council (SRC) at our seminary! Congratulations to all the newly elected members.

The members are 3rd year student Kabelo Motsemme (South Africa, chair), and second year students Happy Maganga (Malawi, secretary) and Yhisak Lelisho (Ethiopia, treasurer).

The SRC is committed to representing the student body, promoting academic excellence, and fostering a sense of community. Let’s show our support and enthusiasm for the journey ahead!

Start of the 2022 Academic Year

This week we’ve welcomed back our students to the LTS campus for the start of the new academic year. 18 students have started their second year of studies. They have been joined by 4 new first year students. We welcome our students back, and pray that the God will bless this new academic year!

Getting ready for the 2022 academic year

With the 2022 academic year starting soon, work has begun to get the classrooms and student accommodation ready. On the pictures you can see how one of the classrooms which served as storage space in 2021 is being turned back into a classroom. We can’t wait to welcome our students back!

Renovations to Chapel Floor

During the summer holidays, life at LTS has not come to a complete standstill. Some renovations were done, most notably the renovation of the chapel floor. The old, holey carpet has been replaced with new tile flooring. Students, staff, and members of the ELC Congregation all helped with the renovations. Thank you!

End of 2021 Academic Year

On November 18, LTS closed the 2021 academic year with Matins and prize-giving. Rector Hiestermann preached on Rev. 1:4-8, while Registrar Rev. Nkambule led the liturgy. We are grateful that even with Covid-19 challenges, we were able to finish the academic year on time. At the prize-giving, students received for each subject prizes for best grade, most improved student, and a “good fellow” award. Below are pictures from the prize-giving ceremony. We wish all students a blessed holiday!

A week in the life of LTS

What can or does typically happen in a week at LTS? To give you a glimpse in seminary life, below a few events from last week are listed:

On Monday, October 25, the last week of classes before the final examinations of 2021 had started. After class, Rev. Nkambule and Rector Hiestermann started calling in the students one by one to give them the opportunity to reflect on the past year at seminary, and share the positive and negative experienced they had.

On Tuesday, October 26, it was the birthday of our Greek lecturer Robert van Niekerk. To celebrate his birthday, Rev. van Niekerk brought cupcakes to seminary – with Greek written on them, of course…

In the afternoon, the last LTS Board and Member meeting of 2021 took place via Zoom.

On Wednesday, October 27, in the afternoon, brass band practice took place with Dr. Manfred Johannes. Students are very keen and classes are going well.

On Thursday, October 28, one of the younger students, Mongezi Mabaso, helped some of the older students to prepare for a computer literacy test on Friday. He showed them how to work with spreadsheets. For us lecturers, it is good to see that students are helping each other this way.

On Friday, October 29, at Matins, we remembered the Reformation started by Martin Luther in 1517. Rector Hiestermann preached on Galatians 5,1-6.

On Sunday, October 31, LTS lecturers Birru, Nkambule, and Hiestermann along with five students attended the farewell ceremony of LCSA bishop emeritus David Tswaedi in Soweto. Rev. Nkambule spoke a word of thanksgiving on behalf of the LTS.

Intensive Courses

From October 11-22, Rev. Christoph Weber and Rev. Thomas Beneke taught intensive courses at LTS. Rev. Beneke presented a practical course on catechesis, and Rev. Weber taught the Apology of the Augsburg Confession. During the class of Rev. Weber, students had to present the articles of the Apology, while others had to deliver critiques to these presentations. The students found this method of teaching very helpful. After completing the two-week intensive courses, students received certificates of attendance (see photos).

New Chicken Coop

From October 11-22, Rev. Thomas Beneke (Newcastle), presented a very practical intensive course. He taught “catechesis practical”. In this course, students had to prepare lesson plans for confirmation class, and then present these lessons to their fellow students, who served as confirmands. Learning also took place outside of class. Rev. Beneke showed students how to grow vegetables according to the method of “farming God’s own way“. As can be seen in the pictures, the vegetable project that was started last year is still going well. Before and after class, Rev. Beneke also built a chicken coup for the LTS, where 15 chickens now are living and hopefully will provide us with many eggs. We thank Rev. Beneke for his initiative and input!

Online Classes Start

Due to current lockdowns and travel restrictions, it is not possible for LTS to start the 2nd academic semester of 2021 with contact classes. For the first time, we are trying online teaching. This is a new experience for us all, and we are facing some teething problems. Please pray that students will be able to return to class soon, and that the online teaching and learning will be blessed.
