Start of 2026 Academic Year and Groundbreaking Ceremony

On Wednesday, February 4th, 2026, LTS started its 26th academic year in Pretoria, and its 75th academic year since the formation of an official seminary in Salem near Piet Retief in 1941. It was a special day, since a groundbreaking ceremony was held to mark the construction of a new building on campus. Rector Hiestermann preached on the watchword from Revelation 21:5: “Behold, I am making all things new”. There are several new things to celebrate, like the new academic year, the new students, and the start of the new building. But in the end, all the new things are done to prepare students to proclaim the message of him, who is coming again to make all things new. Please keep LTS in your prayers again this new academic year.

Construction of new building starts!

After waiting for almost two years to get approval from city council, the construction of the new building has finally started. Thanks be to God. With the new building, we will finally have proper classrooms. The 550m2 building will also have a student commons and kitchen, as well as accomodation for 20 more students. A groundbeaking ceremony is planned for early February when the students are back on campus and the academic year starts. May God grant LTS a blessed 2026, and may the new building be used to glorify his name. We will keep you updated on the progress on this page.

Year End Gift Appeal

In the USA most non-profit organizations receive the majority of its donations in December. At LTS, December traditionally is the month with the lowest donations received. Let’s try to change it this year. Here are some of our major achievements:

LTS now is a fully accredited and registered Private Higher Education Instituaion.
LTS has graduated nine students this year from South Africa, Malawi and Ethiopia.
One former student has successfully completed his MA (Theology) at Concordia Theological Seminary Fort Wayne. Another student is currently enrolled in the same programme. This testifies to the high academic standards of LTS.
Former students continue doing wonderful work proclaiming the Gospel, even in war-torn countries like Sudan and the DRC.

November Graduation and 25th Anniversary Celbration

On November 28, LTS held its November graduation ceremony. It was a historical day, as it was the first graduation as a fully accredited and registered insititution. Four students graduated: Two from South Africa, and one each from Malawi and Ethiopia. In total, nine students graduated in 2025, as five had graduated in June. As part of the graduation ceremony, we also celebrated the 25th anniversary of LTS on its current campus in Pretoria. Dr Ntsimane, who was the LTS rector at the time of the move, held a presentation on the 111-year history of LTS, focussing on the reasons of the move from the rural Enhlanheni to Pretoria. This will be reported on in more detail in the newsletter. We thank God for this joyous day!

LTS Registered As Private Higher Education Instituion

After the Diploma in Theology had been accredited last year, and the qualification was succesfully registered with SAQA (South African Qualifications Agency) earlier this year, LTS is now registered as a Private Higher Education Institution with DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training) under the Higher Education Act, 1997, (Act No. 101 of 1997). LTS is now a fully accredited and registered insitution. We are grateful for all who worked hard to achieve this milestone which ensures high academic standards. Thanks be to God!

June 2025 Graduation

On 20 June 2025, five students graduated from their theological studies at LTS. This year, the celebrations were held in the seminary chapel. Rector Hiestermann welcomed the graduates, their guests, and the LTS staff. Hymns were accompanied by a brass band, keyboard and guitar, making it a joyous occasion. Bishop Sithole (LCSA) preached on the calling of Isaiah, and how it relates to the call of the graduates. Registrar Hanfato served as master of ceremonies. He was also responsible for the the prize-giving, which followed the conferring of certificates to the graduates. For each subject, prizes were awarded for best student, most improved student, and good fellow.

Even though LTS has an international student body with students from six different African countries, this time, the graduates were all South Africans. Rector Hiestermann thanked the faculty and staff for their dedication and faithful work, also thanking all donors who continue making it possible for the LTS to exist and fulfill its mission to graduate multipliers for the Lutheran Church in Africa.

We hope the photos will portray the some of the joys experienced on the day. May the ministries of the graduates bear witness for the glory of God.
