Pictured here is a donation of ground maize, locally known as maize meal, which is used to prepare “mieliepap,” a type of porridge and a staple diet item in South Africa households. This maize meal was donated to the LTS by LCSA congregations from the Northwest Province in South Africa and ferried to the LTS by LCSA BOD member Mr. Bogart Shole. Over the course of the year 2018, the LTS has received record numbers of food donations from both LCSA and FELSISA congregations and individuals, which have gone a long way toward reducing food expenditure at the LTS and helping the LTS meet its budget. It means that the LTS has needed to spend less than a quarter of the R180,000 budgeted for food expenses this year, freeing up the funds for much needed procurements elsewhere. If all goes according to plan and if current trends continue, more than 50% of the LTS income will have been derived from local donors in 2018. This is a tremendous blessing, and we at LTS would like to express our gratitude to all who have supported the LTS in one way or another this year – in the form of financial donations, food gifts, supplies, prayer, or volunteer work.

On Trinity Sunday, May 27, 2018, members of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church confessed the Athanasian Creed after sharing in the Lord’s Supper, thereby giving expression to their unity with all true Christians worldwide. After the divine service, the members proceeded to “share out” – to donate gifts of food and other supplies for use in the kitchen at the Lutheran Theological Seminary down the road. We at LTS are very grateful for these gifts. As we share in these gifts of benevolence, we give thanks to the Lord and share in the faith together with our brothers and sisters in Christ, receiving instruction and being equipped to “share out” the faith in tangible ways ourselves. Thanks be to the triune God for his indescribable mercy!

The 1986 movie “The Three Amigos” features the now famous question: “Do you know what a plethora is?” We at LTS can safely answer: “Yes, we know what a plethora is.” Why? Because we received a plethora of donated and much-needed foodstuffs over the weekend in the form of gifts by gracious members of the Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Arcadia and the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church down the street, both associated with the FELSISA. And we know a plethora when we see one. Thank you to all who so generously donated – our cooking personnel thank you, our hungry students thank you, and the LTS thanks you. Together we give thanks the Lord, for He is good, and His faithfulness endures forever. And we speak confidently to Him who sustains us with His word and gifts:

“The eyes of all look to you,
    and you give them their food in due season.
You open your hand;
    you satisfy the desire of every living thing.” (Ps. 145:15-16)

Our work at LTS of training confessional Lutheran pastors and deaconesses for Africa depends on such donations. Please consider supporting our work in kind or with financial contributions – which are also most welcome! For more information, click here.
